CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Troopers say a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 75 Thursday morning caused a several-vehicle chain reaction in Charlotte County.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, a driver traveling south on I-75 near the U.S. 17 exit in Punta Gorda failed to stop behind a car and collided into back of the car. The hit-and-run driver then drove away, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
A third vehicle traveling southeast on I-75 stopped directly behind the crash, but three other vehicles failed to stop, causing a pile-up.
All cars came to a stop near the overpass of U.S. 17, causing a lengthy backup on I-75.
Florida Highway Patrol says it doesn't know what kind of car started the crash. If you have information regarding the hit-and-run driver, please contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 239-938-1800.
