CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — Construction for the luxury resort Sunseeker has come to a standstill. Allegiant Travel Group announced they’re focusing on their airline, leaving projects like Sunseeker on hold.
Builders broke ground on the $470 million project last March, and it was slated to be complete by next year. But, the company’s Chief Financial Officer Greg Anderson said they won’t put any money into the project at least for a year and a half.
“Our number one priority is to ensure its survival and long-term success. In order to make this happen, we have suspended construction indefinitely on Sunseeker,” said Anderson during an online earnings conference meeting last week.
With a promise of jobs and hotel rooms, locals like Michael Kovach and his wife Marilyn are disappointed.
“It’s just a shame that it’s not going to happen,” said Kovach. “We were really looking forward to coming over the bridge, because we live in Punta Gorda. Utilizing the restaurants, they were supposed to have some nice ones there.”
Yet another setback because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“So many people have lost so much because of this,” said Mrs. Kovach. “I think it’s devastating news to the local economy.”
Anderson also said as of right now there are no plans to complete the Sunseeker resort. So, locals could be stuck looking at that construction site for a very long time.
“I think its an eyesore and it might become blight to our beautiful scenery,” said Mrs. Kovach.
