FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast University is honoring the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic by setting up hand-sculpted tributes.
The art installation, “Field of Remembrance, Cathedral of Sky,” will be dedicated at 11 am on the library lawn.
Ministers of different faith organizations and the creators of the project FGCU professors will be there to present the sculpture.
The sculpture is composed of 8,000 to 9,000 blue and white porcelain votive flowers, which illustrates the magnitude of the number of lives lost to the virus in Southwest Florida and across the state.
FGCU says more than 100 students and campus volunteers have worked together to produce these votives, prepare them for the installation, and develop the exhibition materials.
The votives will remain in place through Monday, April 5.
