Bullet holes tore through a Cape Coral home while the family lie fast asleep in their bedroom.
"I thought the Christmas tree had fallen over and I looked and it was the slider that had been shattered," said Nancy Fermin.
Instead, the sound from outside of her bedroom was bullets shattering the sliding glass door, windrows and even hitting the refrigerator.
"While I was on the phone with the 911 operator I could still hear the shots being fired and we ducked," said Nancy.
At least 18 bullets came from a house across the street from a neighbor firing away in the dark.
Cape Police say he was elderly and had dementia. He thought he heard an intruder outside.
"I could understand if people want to defend themselves, but there was no one, there was no one outside he just fired at random," said Nancy.
Even though any one of those bullets could have killed her, Nancy remains optimistic going into the new year.
"I am afraid right now but, I'm here, this is my home, I don't want to feel afraid all the time," said Nancy.
