Cape Coral pedestrian seriously injured after being hit by car

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Investigators with the Cape Coral Police Department were called to the scene of a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash Wednesday night left left one man seriously injured.

Police say the victim was attempting to cross Cape Coral Parkway East at 7:37 p.m. Wednesday outside of designated crosswalks.

As he crossed from north to south in the 500 block of Cape Coral Parkway East, he was hit by a westbound Lexus.

The driver of the car told police the roadway was very dark and he did not see the pedestrian until standing in the headlights at impact.

Police say the victim, 55-year-old Willie Cook of Cape Coral, was wearing all dark clothing and was over 300 feet from the nearest crosswalk.

He suffered a severe leg injury and also hit his head on the car's windshield.  He was trauma alerted to a local hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
