CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking for the public's help identifying a man who used a cloned credit card to purchase nearly $200 in alcoholic beverages.
During a routine check of her bank account, the victim discovered that someone used her credit card to purchase liquor at a Publix store on Cape Coral Parkway W. in Cape Coral. Soon after contacting law enforcement, deputies discovered that an unknown heavyset white male purchased several bottles of Chivas Regal scotch and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red using a credit card with the victim's banking information. The victim was still in possession of her credit card, so detectives believe her card information was captured by a skimming device at some point prior to the purchase.
"The victim was pro-active in this case by doing a routine check of her bank account, which led to a quick discovery that her personal banking information had been compromised," said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Coordinator. "Had she waited a few more days, the person who gained access to her money could have done even more damage than he already did. We encourage people to monitor their bank accounts, and definitely their credit card statements, to ensure that their information doesn't get stolen - especially as we approach the holiday season, when credit and debit cards are being used more frequently. While there is no way to completely protect yourself from being victimized, other than using cash only, being pro-active will help ensure that a crook doesn't go holiday shopping with your money."
Anyone with information on the identity of the booze bandit is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
