NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - A hit and run driver killed a person walking in the street Monday morning, causing road closures and slowdowns in North Fort Myers.

The crash happened around 5:30am on Pine Island Road near Woodward Avenue, just east of the intersection with N. Cleveland Avenue/U.S. 41.  That's near the Walmart store.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, an unknown driver was westbound and struck the pedestrian victim, then fled the scene.  A second vehicle then approached the victim but was unable to avoid him, striking him with the undercarriage of their SUV.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The first unknown vehicle is suspected to have front end damage.

All westbound lanes of Pine Island Road were closed as emergency crews investigated the crash.  The road was reopened shortly before 11am.

Anyone with any information regarding the hit and run vehicle is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 239-938-1800 or Crime Stoppers.
