LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles kennel that housed and trained some of Hollywood's canine stars has closed its doors after nine decades.
Rick Karl, who's owned the Hollywood Dog Training School for the past 40 years, retired this week.
The school was opened in 1927 by Carl Spitz, a German immigrant who found work training dogs for the movies. According to the school's website, Spitz's family dog, Terry, starred as Toto in "The Wizard of Oz."
The school says the original Lassie, one of several dogs that played the namesake collie in the long-running TV series, was housed at the facility in the San Fernando Valley.
