"Cops," one of network television's first reality shows chronicling the work of police officers across the country, has been canceled due in no small part to the current cultural climate.
Variety reported the news Tuesday night, quoting a Paramount Network spokesperson who said the show was not currently on the air and "we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return."
The show was pulled from the schedule last week in response to the death of George Floyd while in police custody.
Producers had been scouting locations for a new season as late as last month, including Fort Myers, which had hosted camera crews on and off for years.
The program began on the Fox network in 1989 as a series of specials before becoming a regular Saturday night fixture. Fox canceled the series in 2013 and was subsequently picked up by cable's Spike TV, later to become Paramount Network. 1,100 episodes were aired.
Cable's other major police reality series, A&E's "Live PD," is also on hiatus in respect to Floyd's death. That program had recently been renewed for a 160 episode run.
