Violent sexual assault outside Ft. Myers store

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Fort Myers woman is in critical condition after police say she was sexually assaulted outside a Walmart Supercenter on Colonial Boulevard early Tuesday morning. 

Police say they met with a store employee who was attending to a female in her 50s. The victims was physically beaten and had numerous bruises and lacerations to her face and body. Officers were able to talk to the victim before she was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert.

Video surveillance near the loading dock captured the assault on camera.

Around 2:40 AM police were able to locate the suspect laying in the bike path just south of the Caloosa Nature Center off Ortiz Avenue.

The suspect is identified as 32-year-old Joseph Kelley. Kelley is listed as a transient in the Fort Myers area. He was found with dried blood on his hands and clothing.

Kelley is charged with attempted murder and sexual battery. He was booked into the Lee County jail.

The victim is in critical but stable condition.
