CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- We're learning more about the serious bicycle crash that injured two young men Sunday night along Pine Island Road.

According to Cape Coral Police, the victims were a 13-year-old boy and 11-year-old boy.  Their identities have not been released yet.

Police say that around 7:30pm Sunday, the 13-year-old was riding a bicycle with the 11-year-old standing on the rear pegs of the bike.  The boys turned onto Pine Island Road from Nott Road then crossed into the eastbound travel lanes of the road, into the path of an eastbound car.

The car struck the rear of the bicycle, throwing both boys onto the grass median.

The 11-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.  The 13-year-old suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital as well.

Neither of the 16-year-old occupants of the car were injured.

Police say the bicycle was not equipped with a headlight, taillight, nor any type of front, rear, or side reflectors. Neither of the bicyclists were wearing a safety helmet.

The crash forced the shutdown of Pine Island Road for several hours overnight.
