CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- People who live on Southeast 5th Terrace watched a Waste Pro truck driver's quick decision end with a yard covered in recycling.

"Garbage all over the place," said Robert Allison, after seeing it unfold from his window.

The driver feared a fire might ignite. He hustled to the back of the truck and tried to douse the bin with a fire extinguisher. Then the driver dumped the recycling all over the Cape Coral yard.

"I'm sure he thinks he's under some intense pressure from his management for how he may or may not have handled that situation but it looks like it all turned out well," said Gene Payne, who has lived on the street since 2003.

"I hope it turns out well for him [the driver]," Payne added.

Payne says it could've been a whole lot messier.

"The truck itself is just metal and money, it doesn't look like there's any damage and even if it damaged a lawn or even the road, that's all repairable, not a big concern," said Payne.

Neighbors weren't down in the dumps after Waste Pro crews and the fire department hurried to clean up the street. They were just thankful it was recycling and not trash pick-up on Wednesday.

"We are very fortunate, it's not windy, it's just recyclables so they'll clean it up and it'll be all good," said Payne.

Neighbors are grateful the driver was able to walk away. They just hope their next trash pick up day goes a little smoother.
