LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Fort Myers High School student was injured Wednesday morning when he was hit by a car while attempting to board a school bus.

The crash happened just before 6 AM on Pine Ridge Road near the intersection with Bombay Lane, between Kelly Road and Derwent Boulevard.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Cameron Mayhew attempted to cross the southbound lane of Pine Ridge Road as the bus waited in the northbound lane with its lights on and safety signals engaged.

Troopers say a silver Chrysler driven by 23-year-old Zackery Treinen failed to stop for the bus and hit Mayhew as he crossed the street.

Mayhew was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Treinen is charged with failure to stop for a school bus.

"We have traffic laws not suggestions, and if you treat them like suggestions you are going to get in trouble," says Jay Anderson, the Executive Director of Stay Alive, Just Drive.

Anderson says there's only one scenario where passing a stopped school bus is legal.

"Where there is a divided highway that has at least a five foot median".
