LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Gainesville man died Tuesday when his car was rear-ended as he waited at a red light.

It happened shortly after noon Tuesday on Michael G. Rippe Parkway at Briarcliff Road.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 20-year-old Ryan Wendler was stopped in the northbound lane at the red light when the driver of a dumpster truck failed to stop and crashed into the rear of Wendler's car.

The truck pushed the car through the intersection and onto the grass shoulder, where the car became dislodged and was then run over by the truck's rear section.

Wendler was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck, 75-year-old Donald Kottkamp of Cape Coral, has not yet been charged, but the crash is still being investigated.
