Gun expert gives safety tips after accidental shooting

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Tragedy shook Port Charlotte Saturday afternoon, after a father accidentally shot is 22-year old shot while cleaning his handgun.

Joshua Jordan, was pronounced dead later that night.

In light of the tragic accident, 4 in Your Corner spent some time at Fowler Firearms with experts to explain precautionary actions gun owners can do to avoid these situations.

"Number one, treat every firearm as if it’s loaded," explained firearm expert, John Dezendorf. "Number two, do not point it in the direction that you are not willing to destroy. Number 3, don’t you put your finger on that trigger until you have acquired your target and you want to shoot your firearm."

Dezendorf says that he's heard of these tragedies "too many times" and is every time is more motivated to push gun safety on his customers.

In my next class, it will be even more on me to say I can't believe this just happened and it's just another instance that you can reiterate that is new to make them understand this just happened,"

Dezendorf pleaded, "Please don't let this happen again."
