LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A female Florida panther was fatally hit by a vehicle early Tuesday morning along Interstate 75.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife, the 3-4 year old cat was hit in the southbound lanes near mile marker 122, just south of the Corkscrew Road exit.

The collision happened around 4:30 AM.

This is the seventh panther death by vehicle so far this month, and the 18th overall for the year in Florida.

That's slightly ahead of the pace of last year, when a record 41 panther deaths were record in the state.  The 18th death last year was recorded on April 30th.
