Hurricane names Matthew and Otto retired from future lists

There are some names we won't be seeing this hurricane season.  The names Matthew and Otto are now retired for Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes following the deadly 2016 season.

Names get retired when a storm is so deadly or destructive that future use of its name would be insensitive.

Hurricane Matthew caused more than 500 deaths.  It was the strongest Atlantic hurricane since 2007.

And heavy rainfall and flooding from Hurricane Otto caused 18 deaths in Central America.

The names Martin and Owen will replace the two when 2016’s names return in 2022.

2017’s names are:

  • Arlene
