Collier County opens several hurricane shelters

Collier County Officials have opened several emergency shelters for Hurricane Irma evacuees, but many are already at capacity.

According to an update at 6:30 p.m., Gulf Coast High School is open now. 500 seats in the auditorium are available. No cots, pets or mattresses are allowed.

According to a 5;30 p.m. update Saturday from the county, only two shelters in the county remain open. Pets are not allowed in either shelter. Those that come to the shelter are akes to bring everything they will need during their stay, including food, water, bedding, and any other comforts.

  • Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, Florida. 
  • First Baptist Church of Naples, 3000 Orange Blosson Drive, Naples Florida. (Enter the Family Life entrance near the football field.)

The following general population shelters were open earlier in the day. It is unclear if they are still accepting new evacuees: 
• Pinecrest Elementary, 313 S 9th St., Immokalee, Florida 34142 
• Highlands Elementary, 1101 Lake Trafford Road, Immokalee, Florida 34145 
• Laurel Oak Elementary, 7800 Immokalee Road, Naples, Florida 34119 
• Vineyards Elementary, 6225 Arbor Boulevard, Naples, Florida 34119 
• Alico Arena, 10501 FGCU Blvd. S, Fort Myers, Florida 33965 
• Germain Arena, 11000 Everblades Parkway, Estero, Florida 33928 

Lely Elementary School is no longer an evacuation shelter.

Collier Area Transit (CAT) - To facilitate transportation to and from the county’s emergency shelters, Collier Area Transit fares will be waived until the emergency shelters close. Buses with routes close to open shelters will deviate to take residents who need a ride to the shelter.

A special needs only shelter opened at Palmetto Ridge High School, 1655 Victory Lane, Naples, Florida 34120, for electrically dependent or bed ridden pre-registered clients who require nursing care. A family member or caregiver is asked to accompany the special needs person at the shelter.
