COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- The Florida Forest Service planned to conduct a 345-acre prescribed burn on Wednesday, December 12th at Picayune Strand State Forest.

The boundaries of the prescribed burn are Miller Canal on the West side, 66th Avenue SE on the North side, Everglades Boulevard on the East side, and 72nd Avenue SE on the South side. The forest is positioned East of Naples, South of I-75, and North of US 41. Motorists and residents should exercise caution in the area.

The prescribed burn will help to reduce the understory made up of saw palmetto, pine needles and grassy surface fuels. The fire will help with habitat management, silviculture management, and improve wildfire safety.

The Florida Forest Service, a division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, manages more than 1 million acres of state forests and provides forest management assistance on more than 17 million acres of private and community forests.
