LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Sanibel Island man is behind bars after an officer was shot and injured during a traffic stop Sunday night.

Sanibel Police Department says it happened around 8pm Sunday on Periwinkle Way.

They say the officer was pulling someone over when a suspect drove by and shot at the officer.  Sanibel Police were able to locate the suspect in the Dunes neighborhood nearby.

49-year-old Jon Hay has been booked into the Lee County Jail Monday morning.  His home address is listed as the 1400 block of Sand Castle Road, which is where officers tracked the shooter down after the Periwinkle Way incident.

They exchanged gunfire and the suspect was wounded.

He then drove home and was arrested and taken into custody.

The officer who was shot was transported to Lee Memorial, where he was treated and released.

Hay has been charged with Attempted Homicide (Murder First Degree).
