SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. -- Troopers say two people were hit by a semi truck early Tuesday morning while they were tending to their vehicle on the side of Interstate 75, killing one of them.

24-year-old Kayla DiCintio of Bradenton was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, around 1:44 AM, she and 24-year-old Donald Cady were adjusting the load in the back of their pickup truck that was pulled over at the Jacaranda Road overpass, near mile marker 193 in Venice.

That's where troopers say a northbound semi truck struck both of the pedestrians.  DiCintio died at the scene, while Cady sustained serious injuries and was taken to Sarasota Memorial for treatment.

A third person inside the pickup truck was uninjured.

The crash caused all northbound lanes to be closed for approximately 7 hours while troopers investigated.

No charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is still under way.
