PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- In a room full of concerned citizens, Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis knew the recent 7-Eleven murder case would be top of mind.
" I can assure you this case is nowhere near getting cold", said the chief. "It's got an abundance of leads that we are following up on every day."
It's been two months since 18-year-old Kyle Farishian was killed working a night shift at a Punta Gorda 7-Eleven. Investigators are still looking for the killer they say shot the teen and then burned the convenience store.
At his "Coffee with the Chief" Tuesday, a new monthly initiative aiming at creating an open line of communication with citizens, chief Lewis tells the group "the only thing that I can share with you is that it is a very active investigation."
For a community that had not seen a homicide in six years, meeting the chief was a reassurance. "I think it's wonderful that we can come in and talk to him in an easy atmosphere and voice our concerns," says Bob Newton, a long time resident. "I think what a lot of people have to understand is that he can't say a lot about an ongoing investigation."
"Coffee with the Chief" will take place on the first Tuesday of every month at the Punta Gorda Police Department from 7am to 8am. Everyone is welcome.
