WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A male student was killed in a shooting at a high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Wednesday.

He was identified as William Chavis Renard Miller Jr.

“I haven’t cried in a while, but I’ve been crying since I left the hospital,” Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

A shooter, who is believed to be a student at Mount Tabor High School, was taken into custody hours after the shooting, the sheriff's office confirmed.

No other students were injured in the shooting, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

Law enforcement described a scene of scared students hiding, not knowing what was going during the shooting.

Jessica Perez told the Winston-Salem Journal that her daughter was texting her from inside the classroom during the shooting.

"She said that some kids were crying and wanting their parents, but they are not letting anyone leave," Jessica Perez said.

Once evacuated, students were taken to a nearby grocery store to be reunited with their parents.

North Carolina Gov. Ray Cooper offered his condolences after the shooting.

Police say many other schools in the area were locked down out of an abundance of caution.

Winston-Salem is located west of Greensboro.
