Investigators are looking into a possible case of mail theft, after a drive-up mailbox outside the U.S. Post Office on Creekside Parkway in North Naples was found to be tampered with.

Tom, a Naples resident who said he dropped six checks in the mailbox around July 4 to pay bills, believes whoever tampered with the mailbox also grabbed those those checks and altered them. He told Fox 4 that it appeared that someone was able to change the name of the person to be paid, as well as the amount.

"We had written checks for $150 to Blue Cross or something, and then that check (was cashed for) $1,800 to Santiago-whatever," Tom said.

"We were over $11,000 in fraudulent checks, and that was quite a shock," he added.

He said Wells Fargo, his bank, should be able to reimburse him for the money he lost.

A report on the incident requested from the Collier County Sheriff's Office was not available Monday.

A representative for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said that they had not received any official complaints of mail theft in the mailbox tampering incident, but that anyone who believes their mail was stolen should call them at 877-876-2455 and select Option 2.
