IMMOKALEE, Fla. — On Saturday, Turkeys Take Flight, a 501C3 nonprofit, a Fort Lauderdale-based charity celebrates the 8th year of delivering turkeys to needy families to Immokalee.
They will be delivering turkeys this year on the ground instead of by air due to covid19.
This year we will not be led by a World War II-era DC-3 and a small fleet of private planes that land at Immokalee Regional Airport; instead, vehicles will drive with 250 turkeys and "trimmings" to RCMA.
"Unfortunately, this year, the DC-3 will not be honored with a shower, a "water salute" traditionally performed in honor of pilots completing their last flights before retirement. We hope to return to the air next year once the pandemic is behind us," Tom Powers, Operations Director of Turkeys Take Flight.
This year, families from RCMA's Immokalee Community School, Immokalee High School, Guadalupe, Rotarians from LaBelle, and Immokalee will help unload the turkey's vehicles and distribute them.
Later, RCMA will distribute turkeys among Immokalee's low-income residents. Besides the charter schools, the nonprofit RCMA operates 69 child-care centers in Florida, including six in Collier County.
