PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- A man was arrested Sunday in Port Charlotte after he reportedly threw a punch at a deputy who was questioning him about stealing a newspaper.
28-year-old Richard Schumacher has been charged with Resisting Officer with Violence, Occupied Burglary of a Dwelling, Violation of Probation (2 Counts), Failure to Register as a Convicted Felon, and Petit Theft.
On Sunday, a resident in the Heritage Oak Park community reported a suspicious person who had rung their doorbell and acted confused when they answered. The man left, but the resident noticed that he had damaged their lanai screen to get on onto their porch.
Deputies then made contact with Schumacher when he came out of the clubhouse, where he allegedly stole a newspaper.
Schumacher said he was looking for a relative's home, but could not provide a name or address. That's when they say he threw a punch at the deputy and fled on foot.
Deputies used a taser to stop Schumacher after a short chase, and he continued to resist arrest and threatened to kill the deputies.
