HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. -- Several students were injured Wednesday morning when troopers say a semi truck rear-ended a Highland County school bus in Lake Placid.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, it happened on U.S. 27 at the intersection with Lake Ridge Drive.

A school bus had stopped to let students on the bus and had its lights flashing when the truck failed to stop and hit the rear of the bus, which was pushed off the road and overturned.

A preliminary report indicates that two students were seriously injured and flown to Tampa General for treatment.

Three other students and the school bus driver were taken to local hospitals with injuries.

A total of 39 students were on the bus at the time of the crash.

The truck's driver, 45-year-old Stanley Lockwood of Orlando, is being charged with careless driving.  He suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Troopers are still investigating.
