FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A multiple-vehicle crash along Colonial Boulevard Wednesday morning is causing backups onto the Midpoint Bridge and knocked down power poles.

Numerous rescue units are responding to the area of Colonial Boulevard at Lazio Way, just west of Summerlin Road.

Eastbound traffic on the Midpoint Bridge from Cape Coral into Fort Myers was closed off to traffic for several hours but has since reopened at about 1 p.m.

According to Fort Myers Police, it all started when a red sports car lost control and hit a light pole near the Fort Myers base of the bridge, causing power lines to fall across both lanes and scattering debris across the scene.

Florida Power and Light has a crew at the scene to make repairs to equipment and replace power poles.

We'll update as we learn more.
