SANIBEL, Fla. – The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel is open again, despite government shutdown.

Their free visitor and education center opened Thursday with limited services. Films, lectures, free tours, and special exhibitions will resume Friday.

The refuge is federally run. So due to the shutdown, they furloughed most of their employees and are running on a scaled-back staff.

Those workers will get paid from entrance fees, not appropriations.

The park is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
