FORT MYERS, Fla -- An emotional dedication ceremony is planned for Friday morning, to honor a fallen trooper killed in the line of duty.

Fox 4 was live as preparations for that ceremony were underway Friday morning.

In 1985, trooper Lindell J. Gibbons, 38, was killed in the line of duty when his patrol car crashed during an attempted traffic stop on I-75.

A portion of the interstate in Collier County, where he served, will become Trooper Lindell J. Gibbons Memorial Highway.

Gibbons left behind two young sons when he died.

“His family has had to deal with his loss since. Florida Highway Patrol has had to deal with his loss… his friends, co-workers, his peers. So it’s been trying ever since, it’s been a long time coming. So we’re really happy to be able to dedicate MM 102 to 100 on I-75 in Collier County in his honor,” said Lt. Bueno.

Gibbons was also a United States Air Force Veteran.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m.
