LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Parents in Southwest Florida are on edge after more than half a dozen suspicious person cases have been reported to local police.
The majority of cases involve an adult trying to lure a child with items like candy or money. Police say so far no arrests have been made.
"It's not something you know any parent wants to hear," said Cape Coral resident Brittany Gordon.
Gordon said she's watching her kids a little more closely when playing at the park. However, she's also taught her two daughters from a young age to never talk to strangers.
"Just got to be aware, be aware and safe out there. That's all you can do as long as you prepare and your kids know the right things hopefully everything will turn out alright," said Gordon.
Cape Coral Police said a stranger talking to your kid isn't a crime. It's only when there's obvious signs of a possible abduction that charges can be filed. However, police said if you or your child ever feels uncomfortable you said take mental notes and immediately call police.
"So a lot of them may seem like nothing, they may be nothing, they may not be nothing but we cover our bases," said Cape Coral PD Cpl. Mullen.
Cape Police have filed reports for all of the recent suspicious person calls. In one of the most recent cases the department was able to contact a potential suspect after a witness was able to get a license plate number.
"We got a tag that matched up with the car and talked to that person didn't turn out to be anything, but at least we were able to follow up and figure out it was nothing," said Cpl. Mullen.
