FORT MYERS, Fla. — Police have arrested a man who they believe responsible for knocking down the Robert E. Lee statue located in Downtown Fort Myers.
On March 12th, 2019 police responded to a Criminal Mischief call. Upon arrival Officer, Spencer and Officer Price observed the bust of Robert E. Lee on the ground and removed from the pedestal.
After a brief investigation police were able to identify two males, who may have been responsible for vandalizing the statue and asked for the public’s help in finding them.
Police were able to pull the video from Downtown and observed a white Nissan Rogue. They were able to confirm the owners of the vehicle.
After further investigating, and based on the totality of the circumstances, officers issued a warrant for David Howes.
Howes, 46, was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief, $1,000 a third-degree felony.
His bond was set at $5000. Howes has bonded out.
