COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- An analysis of crime statistics in American cities has placed Naples as one of the safest cities in Florida.

That's according to the website backgroundchecks.org. They've just released their "Safest Cities to Live in Florida 2019" list.

They used the most recent FBI crime statistics to create state rankings. After filtering out the American cities with populations of less than 10,000, 2,929 cities remained. They calculated violent crime rates and property crime rates by dividing the crime numbers by the population to get rates per 1,000. They also calculated the ratio of law enforcement workers to per 1,000.

The resulting list found that Sweetwater, just east of Miami, topped their list of 134 Florida cities.

Southwest Florida cities scored well on the list, with Naples taking the #2 spot, followed by Marco Island (#9), Punta Gorda (#10), and Cape Coral (#36).

Earlier this year, another study ranked Marco Island and Naples as the third and fourth safest cities in the state of Florida.
