LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Surveillance cameras captured the moments when a man tried breaking into a SUV in Fort Myers.

The security system saw a car's headlights appearing on Carmelle Drive before the driver circled back to one of the homes on the street.

"Shows them casing the house, dropping the individual off," said Nick, who wanted to remain anonymous.

He shared his surveillance video with 4 In Your Corner. The cameras were rolling when a hooded person boldly walked towards the family's white Nissan Murano. Then the man opened the door.

"He rummaged and rifled through the car," said Nick. "In the glove compartment and the center console," he added.

He hopes the investment he made in HD cameras will help police get a good look at the person's face.

"Worth every bit of it when you get done with situations like this," he said.

The surveillance video paid off when it came time to turn it over to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

"Without the video footage, they wouldn't have pulled prints," said Nick. "They found some good prints and hopefully down the road the individual makes another mistake and gets caught in the database," he added.

The man in the video only rummaged through the Nissan instead of the other cars in Nick's driveway.

"We were bringing in groceries," said Nick. "I figured the new Murano would lock itself if you didn't have the key in there and that's not the case. We fell victim to our own mistake," he added.

The camera mounted on the side of Nick's house showed the man picked up by the same car that dropped him off. Nick hopes his cameras will motivate his neighbors to invest in some security.

"My neighbor asked me why I was doing this and I asked him the same question," said Nick. "You have to have some kind of footage, you have to have information," he added.

Nick also told 4 In Your Corner the man didn't make off with anything from the Nissan.
