CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A Southwest Florida father taking his lessons to elementary school kids a step further, as he tries teaching them how to plant fruit trees.
Karl Sonders, who has a daughter who attends Hector Cafferata Elementary School in Cape Coral, donated several trees to the school because he wants them to know fruits and vegetables don't come from the store, but from the earth.
Earlier this week, Sonders and volunteers brought mango trees, cherry trees, lime trees, and orange trees to be planted for every grade level. Sonders says teaching these kids to plant these trees makes them apart of a very important process.
"All the trees make oxygen and oxygen is so important for all of the animals for us to breath," Sonders said.
Once the kids got their hands on the shovel and planted those trees, the kids say these lessons can stick with them.
"When you grow older, you could plant your own trees or have your own garden to help people in need," said fifth-grader, Olivia German
"You can do this when you’re older, and you can also teach kids when you have kids," said fifth-grader Calan Mangan
Sonders says all it takes is a little dirt, some water, and a lot of love.
If every family would plant a tree, every year or every two years the earth would be a better place," Sonders said.
Sonders says he and other volunteers will be at Hector Cafferata Elementary School tomorrow morning to plant four more trees.
