LEE COUNTY, Fla., - A Lee County fifth grader forced to go to a hospital after being bullied during school.
“There’s been a lot of bullying going on,” said Danita Wheeler, the mother of the child.
Wheeler says her son who goes to Lehigh Elementary School, was beaten in the back of the head during school by the same student who previously called him hateful names.
She says the altercation happened last week in the hallway of the school while other students were playing a game. She says her son was keeping to himself. Yet, Wheeler says her son ended up on the ground taken by surprise.
“My son’s back was turned. Before he knew it, he had been punched in the back of the head. And then, he kicked him,” Wheeler said. “For him to have to go to school and not know what's going to happen next to him, that doesn’t put a good feeling in my heart.”
Wheeler says doctors at Lee Health say her son suffered a concussion from being knocked to the ground after he complained of stomach pain, nausea and a headache.
On Friday, Wheeler said she got another call from the school about another incident with another student.
“The boy grabbed his chain and tried to choking him trying to pull his chain off of his neck.”
Wheeler, a District employee, tells 4 In Your Corner she expects the School to do more to keep her child safe before he gets hurt.
When 4 In Your Corner reached out to the District Friday, a spokesperson sent us this this statement.
“The School District fully investigated both isolated incidents. The students involved were disciplined per the student code of conduct.”
“It just bothers me because there’s no safety in the school. The staff is not doing what it’s supposed to do. They’re not protecting these students,” Wheeler said.
Wheeler says her son is still recovering from the latest incident.
