LEE COUNTY, Fla. — One Lee County commissioner candidate is being asked to leave his party.

The chairman of the Lee County Republic Party, Jonathan Martin, issued a letter calling for Sonny Haas to leave the party.

The letter also called for Haas to leave the race for the District 5 county commission seat.

It goes on to say that the party supports people of all races and that it was shocked to hear that Haas used the "n" word in a recent email.

Martin says the board held a meeting to discuss Haas' actions.

"Our board decided that it was very important to let the public know that the Republican party in no way endorses those statements that he made," Martin says.

Haas is one of four qualifying candidates currently running for the seat.

He previously told FOX 4that the words used in the email were not his own.

Instead, he says he quoted someone else. Haas refused to disclose who said them.
