LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — The Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed some details surrounding a homicide investigation that began late Wednesday night in Lehigh Acres.

Several deputy vehicles surrounded and taped off a portion of Gerald Ave. near East 6th St. after responding to a shots fired call about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5.

One person who lives nearby who says you could clearly hear what was happening from several houses away.

“I’ve been hunting all my life," said Jim Friedlander. "I know the difference between firecrackers and shots, and there was two of them. I’m going to say a minute apart.

"This is not the Lehigh I grew up in," he added.

After several hours on the scene, a van from the LCSO Crime Scene Unit arrived shortly before 7 a.m., followed shortly thereafter by a mobile command unit.

In a tweet posted just before 10 a.m. Thursday, LCSO wrote "The incident is isolated and all parties are accounted for." In a later Facebook post, deputies said an altercation led to the shooting and that a male victim had died.

A neighbor walking his dog Thursday morning said the presence of law enforcement has him concerned.

"I live in a nice area and it's like Detroit again - like 8 Mile," said Robert Fraser. "I left Detroit five years ago to come to Florida and now its happening right outside where I live again."

The Major Crimes Unit is overseeing the investigation, which is ongoing. Details about the victim and possible suspects have not been released by the agency.
