Inmates getting tablet devices in Charlotte County

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- County jail inmate in Charlotte County are being provided digital devices to help ease communication with family members and assist with legal assistance.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the devices are being provided with no additional cost to the facility.
The smart tablet-style devices utilize a messaging service for contacting outside friends or family. The app charges inmates credit, of which they are given two each week. Sending a message costs one credit, sending a photo costs two. Additional credits may be purchased.
There are plans to have to tablets feature an online law research program.
CCSO says other agencies using similar devices reported decreased stress levels among inmates, which can help increase positive interactions with staff.
Inmates will also begin receiving their regular mail on the devices. Beginning January 1st, all non-privileged inmate postal mail must be sent to the following address to be scanned for viewing on the tablets:
