CAPE CORAL, Fla — It's Hispanic Heritage Month, and we want to continue to highlight members of the Hispanic community right here in Southwest Florida who are doing some amazing things.

Tucked in the corner of Cape Coral, you'll find a little piece of Puerto Rico.

"We are trying to find that authentic flavor that fills that emptiness that we have for a taste of home,” said Carlos Silen.

Carlos Silen is the owner of WOW Sandwich Grill.

"I love cooking; it is one of my passions," said Carlos Silen.

His goal is to bring the flavors from the island to southwest Florida.

“It’s funny because people come and when they taste the food they say ‘wow how delicious,’ and that's the name of the business,” said Silen.

But Silen’s dream didn't start with food.

Having been in the culinary industry for 30 years, Silen dreamt of producing his own sangria.

"I said, well, if my product is of good quality, I have to look for motivation to develop it," said Silen.

That motivation led him to start his business two years ago — starting with a small menu.

“Thank god the small menu grew, the place grew," said Silen.

Fast forward to now, not only has is his dream of selling his 69 Artisan Sangria come true, but also his food has become popular.

Silen says 69 represents his birth year.

"We have spectacular support from our clients; they are a true blessing that we are receiving," said Silen.

But it hasn’t always been easy, Silen says the pandemic took a toll on them.

But even then, they found a way to support the community in times of crisis.

"We partnered with a radio station, and together we were able to help many first responders," said Silen.

Together they donated more than 100 meals.

Although sales are important, Silen says his goal is that every person that walks through his door feels like family.

"That does not pay the bills, but it fills another part of life that money cannot fill," said Silen.

And also important — that people leave with the right impression.

"When other nationalities come, we want them to leave with the right impression of what we Latinos really are," said Silen.
