COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - The primary election is Tuesday, August 28th, and more than 1.2 million Floridians have already cast a ballot.

More people are participating in early voting this year than in the mid-term primary election back in August 2014.

36,000 more people have already voted, and more have voted by mail than in person.

According to Florida's Division of Elections, more than 960,000 ballots were sent in by mail and over 280,000 people voted in person.

In Southwest Florida, Republicans are outpacing Democrats, but that's expected, because there are more registered Republicans in our area.

However, voter turnout has been low in Collier County.

The Supervisor of Election's Office in Naples say it's important to vote as soon as possible because candidate such as the clerk of courts, school board members and judges will be elected in the primary election.

Regardless of party affiliation, Trish Robertson says everyone can vote for those candidates.

She says the turnout for the primary is typically slow, especially early voting.

August 28th is the last day to mail in a ballot. Lee and Collier County's early voting sites will be open until Saturday August 25th. Charlotte County voting sites will be open until Sunday August 26th.
