CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Most of the country looks to the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, to predict how long winter will last but here in southwest Florida, we have a famous ground owl.

The tradition of the ground owl predicting our weather began three years ago in Cape Coral.

This is a way to celebrate the fact that the city holds the title for having the largest population of burrowing owls in the state.

This marks Cape Coral as the premier destination to see the little guys in action.

Pascha Donaldson with Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife says this event is great for bringing conservation awareness about the burrowing owl.

"We don’t have groundhogs we have ground owls! And so this was a little dream of mine to create a replication of groundhog day. It's very important because it's our official city bird. We want to educate people on what our ground owl means to the city of cape coral," says Donaldson.

The event starts at Pelican Baseball Complex at 10 am. CDC guidelines of mask-wearing and social distancing will be enacted.
