TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — WFTX asked Annika Culver, associate professor of East Asian history at FSU, for her take on what North Korea’s military has been up to.

The U.S., South Korea and Japan have all said it’s been firing missiles that have landed in the sea.

If they are ballistic missiles, that would be in violation of United Nations orders.

Professor Culver says, because the North Koreans did not publicly announce they were launching anything, it could be just a routine series of weapons testing for the country.

But she says it’s also possible the country is trying to test the waters with the Biden administration and may even be using the launches to try to re-engage the U.S on nuclear talks.

She adds that another possibility is that North Korea is trying to signal to its citizens that it’s got military might.

Another theory, she says, is that North Korea may be sending a message of disapproval to South Korea which has recently conducted regularly scheduled military exercises with the U.S.
