CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Four Cape Coral officers were honored with the Meritorious Service Award for their heroic efforts on a tragic November 2020 call.

Chief Anthony Sizemore presented the awards for exceptional performance of duty to include extraordinary acts of courage or actions that bring great credit upon the Police Department, the police profession, or recipient through devotion to duty or service to the public on or off-duty.

On Nov. 25, around 11:55 p.m., the officers responded to the 3100 block of NE 6th Ave., where a car crashed into a canal, fully submerged with two children trapped inside.

Officers Brandon Sancho, Nicholas Isaacs, Ronny Greenup, and Dragoslav Maksimovic entered the canal in an attempt to free the children without regard for their own safety.

With the assistance of the Cape Coral Fire Department, one child was pulled from the vehicle, and the other removed shortly after. Both children were transported to the hospital but sadly passed away. The officers nonetheless bravely tried to save the children, setting themselves apart by their extraordinary act of courage.
