A proposed state law allowing guns on church grounds, even if a school is on the same property, passed in the Florida House today.

Current state law allows licensed concealed carry at religious institutions except when a school is on the property. Safety of Religious Institutions, or Florida House Bill 259, would remove that exception.

Republicans, who have the majority in both chambers, are backing the bill claiming this change is a property rights issue designed to support churches and synagogues that wish to allow weapons. HB 259 supports say allowing more guns in churches will protect parishioners from mass shootings.

Democrats were largely opposed, claiming if it becomes law it is unfair and dangerous for children.

Under HB 259, churches will not be required to allow guns inside and can post signs prohibiting them.
