NORTH PORT, Fla. — A North Port man was arrested for sexual battery of a minor. Reports say he was a "father figure" to the girl and that their relationship was familial and custodial in nature.

On Dec 23, 2020, sexual abuse allegations were made against Michael Collin Reid, 37, of North Port during an ongoing investigation regarding the same child.

In the originating incident, on Dec 18, he took the girl to locations in Manatee and Sarasota Counties without permission. He came back to North Port on Dec. 19 and returned the child and was arrested for interference with the custody of a minor to her step-mother.

The girl told investigators that while in Manatee County, Reid suggested they have intercourse. According to reports, the child told police that they had sex twice on Dec. 18.

The next morning, he took her to his place of employment in Sarasota County to change vehicles. While in a utility vehicle they had sex a third time. Evidence containing DNA left at this location later confirmed the girl's story.

During the investigation, Reid's relationship with the child was described as both familial and custodial in nature, and that he had become a father figure to her.

Reports say he had previously taken her on outings and trips and that he was somewhat obsessive and controlling with her activities.

Prior to this incident, he tried to get Power of Attorney over the child, but it was never properly endorsed or notarized.

Reid is currently being held at the Sarasota County Jail without bond until after his first appearance.
