LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Exciting things are happening at The Alva School in Southwest Florida.

The school has a new agriculture program, and they are getting big props from state agriculture commissioner Nikki Fried.

She visited the school to see the barn, the raised gardens, and live animals they have on campus.

Fried said the hands-on program is preparing kids for a future in agriculture. "What they’re doing here is taking the experiences that they’re having here on the property, but doing it to make sure they have a career in the future, and love what they’re doing. You can see it on their faces."

The program opened mid-November.

The school’s Facebook page said that many people and area businesses donated time, money, and physical help to make the barn and gardens possible.
