Five Fort Myers High School seniors were recently selected as semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Dahlia Dry, Devin Mix, Timmy Robertson, Ryan Schmelzle and Cynthia Sheng scored in the top 1% of high school seniors across the country in their P-SATs.

"To have conversation and listen how they speak about their education, they run circles around me," said Principal Robert Butz.

According to Rob Spicker with the Lee County School District, these students are the only semifinalists in Lee County District schools this year.

All five seniors are involved in the IB program, several honor societies and different clubs and sports at Fort Myers High School.

"They are hardworking. They really are passionate about learning and the excitement that they bring to the classroom is awesome," said Jennifer Tomlinson, an IB English teacher at Fort Myers High School.

The students said they were all happily surprised to become semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Timmy Robertson said, "Not many people can say they were a semifinalist, so it just makes me feel good."

The National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected in the spring from this group of semifinalists.
