ESTERO, Fla — A new paint job is coming to the Hertz arena, but it won't be as bright as originally planned.

The Estero Design and Review Board approved a revised proposal by Hertz, which took over naming rights earlier this year. Hertz officials say painters will get to work in the next couple days.

“These colors, we can’t soften them up, they are what they are,” said Board Chair Bill Glass.

Hertz’s original proposal would have painted the entire arena yellow. After weeks of tinkering, Hertz officials brought back a revised version of what they want the former Germain arena to look like.

“This facade right now is probably about 14 percent yellow,” said Joe McHarris, a consultant hired to work on the project.

Vice President of Brand for Hertz, Eoghan Slye says the company worked with residents concerned about the aesthetics of the arena, particularly people living in the Tidewater sub-division just north of the arena.

“I don’t look at it as a compromise, I look at it as a win. I think the community of Estero won, I think we have a great design, the way that we got here is even better,” said Slye.

The new look features a gray roof, with most of the yellow on the base or middle of the building. But not all residents left the meeting satisfied.

"The yellow is a more obtrusive non standard color for our community’s color pallet,” said Todd Goodman.

The painting process will take about 6 weeks and putting up the new Hertz lettering a little longer. The work will not affect any hockey games or concerts scheduled during that time.
