Deputies find malnourished horse in Alva

ALVA, Fla. — The Lee County Sheriffs Office responded to a call regarding a possible animal cruelty case.

Upon arrival, deputies found a white and brown horse showing signs of malnutrition.

Deputies use a special scoring system to gauge the overall health of the horse. The horse scored a 2.5.

The horse had sores and cuts on the back of the horse’s rear legs.

A fresh wound on the left side of the horse’s head bled and was infested with flies.

The horse’s hooves were overgrown and cracking, and a scar was apparent on the horse’s neck.

After investigating police located the owner Jose Antonio Gamez Azcanio, 71 and

charged him with Torment, Deprive, Mutilate, Kill an Animal and Permit

Livestock to Run at Large or Stray.

Azcanio was transported to the Lee County Jail.
